Surgical Abortion Procedure
Abortions are performed through 16 weeks of pregnancy counting from
the first day of the last normal period. An ultrasound is required
after the 12th week through the 16th week of pregnancy. The
ultrasound can be performed in our office if we determine that you
are over twelve weeks.
The procedure used for surgical abortion is vacuum aspiration. This is a relatively low-risk procedure, the safest method of abortion available today. This procedure is done under local anesthesia; nitrous oxide is also provided. Your entire visit will take approximately three hours from start to finish. The actual abortion takes approximately 5-7 minutes; the remainder of the time will be allocated between a medical history, lab work, a conference with Dr. Yoffa, your preliminary examination, the procedure itself and a period of recovery.
Prior to your departure, you will be given an antibiotic. You will also be given a sheet containing postoperative precautions and instructions. You will have a final meeting with Dr. Yoffa to discuss possible birth control methods and to give you an opportunity to ask any further questions.
Finally, it is extremely important that you make an appointment to see us or your personal physician for a follow-up examination three weeks after the procedure. This is an essential final measure to make sure the procedure was complete and that there have been no complications. Your health, safety and well being are our main concern.
IV Sedation is availoable, however, you musr ve accompanied by an adult driver.
Non-Surgical or Medical Abortion
(RU486)
A medical abortion is a method of terminating an early pregnancy
using drugs (Mifeprex and Misoprostol) instead of a surgical
procedure. In order to have a medical abortion you must be 49 days (7
weeks) or less from the first day of your last normal menstrual
period. An ultrasound will be performed in our office at the time of
your first visit to confirm that you are early enough into the
pregnancy to have a medical abortion.
You will be required to make two or three visits to our office over a two-week period. At your first appointment, the doctor will obtain a medical history, examine you, and an ultrasound is performed. You will also receive a Medication Guide explaining how the treatment works. If you choose a medical abortion, the first medication (Mifeprex) is given in the office. Two days later, you will take another medication (misoprostol) which stimulates uterine contractions and promotes the expulsion of an early pregnancy.
Finally, it is essential that you return to our office two weeks after taking the initial medication for a follow-up examination and an ultrasound to make sure the pregnancy has been terminated.
