our history...our mission

Until the Women’s Health Center of West Virginia opened in 1976, a full range of reproductive services for women simply was not available in West Virginia. Volunteers throughout the state worked together to create the Women’s Health Center. They built it upon a philosophy of personalized care. Organizations and individuals donated both time and money to the Center during its first two years. The Women’s Health Center is now supported by grants, donations and fees.

The Women’s Health Center provides affordable, high-quality reproductive health services. The Center meets the special needs of women and teenage girls, regardless of their income, by providing a comprehensive system of health care. The Women’s Health Center offers wellness education and serves as an advocate for reproductive freedom. The staff respects women’s dignity, the right of reproductive choice, personal values, and confidentiality.

The Board of Directors of the Women’s Health Center includes its consumers. In this way, the attitudes, customs, and politics of West Virginia women are represented on the Board and are incorporated into the services provided by the Center.

The Women’s Health Center helps women identify ways to pay for services. Most gynecological services are available free to eligible women. West Virginia Medicaid is also accepted.

Counseling
In order to take full advantage of reproductive services, women must be aware of their options and understand the meaning of their choices. The Women’s Health Center offers pregnancy, parenthood, adoption, and abortion counseling. Women are given information about options so that they may make educated decisions, based upon their own feelings and values. For women obtaining abortion services, a counselor is always available at no additional charge.

Pregnant women and teenage girls in Kanawha County may be eligible to participate in the Parent Program which includes in-home counseling, parent education, support, transportation to important appointments, and referral to other agencies as needed.

The Women’s Health Center of West Virginia, Inc. is a non-profit corporation. Your tax-deductible contributions are appreciated. We welcome your support in providing to all women high-quality reproductive health care.
