Vasectomy is an ambulatory procedure performed on-site under local anesthesia. Post-operative examinations are available to check the success of the surgery.

Questions and Answers about male sterilization:

How is a Vasectomy performed?

A local anesthetic is administered to the scrotum (the pouch of skin that holds the testicles). There may be some pain during the injection, but this is not severe. You will be awake during the entire operation. A small opening is made on each side of the scrotum. Each of the two tubes (vas deferens) that carry sperm are closed off. The entire procedure takes 15 minutes.

Is the operation 100% effective?

It's 99.95% effective. Only one out of 1,000 men who have the operation will still get a woman pregnant. Infrequently, the closed ends of the tubes have grown back together.

Is is necessary to use another method of birth
control after the operation?

Yes, temporarily. Two semen analyses are required after the vasectomy to assure the success of the operation; six weeks after the operation and twelve weeks later. Other birth control methods should be used until the results of the analysis show no sign of sperm.

Does male sterilization affect the sex drive?

No, but sex should be avoided for one week until all soreness and swelling have disappeared.

When should a man consider sterilization?

Only when he is absolutely sure he never wishes to have any more children. There is a 30-day waiting period after counseling and the signing of a written consent form. If more than six months passes after signing, the counseling and consent process will be required again.

Medicaid / all insurance accepted.
