Home Care Instructions

All Second Trimester patients who live further than one (1) hour driving distance from the clinic must remain in the Dallas area for 5-6 hours following their discharge from the recovery room.

It is extremely important that you have a post-abortion checkup in 4 weeks following the procedure. Our office charge is $20 for this examination. The following post-abortion medications may be purchased through our licensed pharmacy at a cost of $10 prescription:
Doxycycline 100 mg used to prevent infection and Motrin 800 mg for relief of pain.
If you are not purchasing the above medications from our pharmacy or you require a different medication, a prescription will be given upon discharge from the recovery room.

Birth Control Pills

1 month starter pack and a prescription (determined by the physician) is provided to those patients who choose this form of contraception.

Birth Control Information

Counseling and information regarding birth control methods including Norplant insertion is available for those patients undecided in their means of contraception.

With the Dilation & Evacuation method of abortion, complications are not common and almost never serious if you take the precautions described below. Should you have any problems or questions regarding your home care instructions, please

Call the Office: 972-385-1333 / 800-942-7774

Phones answered 24 hours.

Your call will be returned within 30 minutes by either the on-call Physician, Registered Nurse (R.N.) or Licensed Vocational Nurse (L.V.N.). Please keep in mind that abortion is a specialized medical procedure. The physician who performed your procedure will be able to deal more effectively with your questions than anyone else. However, if for some reason, we are unable to contact you within 30 minutes, you may also contact the Emergency Medical Service (EMS) or present yourself for care at the nearest hospital emergency room.

Bleeding

Mild to moderate bleeding (like a heavy period) is expected for up to 14 days following the procedure. However, some women experience no bleeding at all for 2-3 days, then begin to bleed like a normal period. Some women have light spotting on and off and then again some women have no bleeding at all which is normal for them. But, if you feel that you are bleeding too heavily, or soak through a sanitary pad in one hour, contact the office immediately.

Cramping

Mild to moderate cramping is normal. Some women have no cramping. But, if you have pain or cramping unlike menstrual cramps or severe cramping, contact the office immediately.

Fever

Take your temperature every morning and night for the next 3 days. If your temperature is over 100.4, call the office immediately.

Discharge

If you experience a foul-smelling discharge, call the office immediately.

Breasts

You may experience some mild secretion and/or breast tenderness after the procedure. To alleviate any discomfort: (1) wear a tight bra, 24 hours a day (2) do not touch and/or press your breasts (3) take pain medication if needed. These symptoms should disappear in about 6-7 days if you follow the instructions.

DO NOT: Douche or use any feminine sprays for 2 weeks.
DO NOT: Take a tub bath or go swimming for 10 days. However, you may take a shower.

Your period may be expected in about 4-8 weeks following the procedure. DO NOT be alarmed if this period is not completely normal.
