- Sonography
- Before having an abortion, all patients will be required to undergo a sonogram examination. The sonogram report will be helpful to the doctor in estimating the length of pregnancy. The cost of the examination is included in the procedure fee. If you have had a sonogram done previously, please bring a copy of the sonogram report with photograph attached on your first visit.
Pelvic Exam
- It is required that all patients have a pelvic exam before undergoing an abortion so that the size of your uterus and length of pregnancy may be determined.
The Procedure
Prior to the abortion procedure, you will be given an injection to help you relax. The cervix will then be anesthetized by injecting Xylocaine (a numbing medication) around the opening to your uterus. Some women experience cramping or a stinging sensation as the anesthetic is administered. Most women experience cramping during and/or after the procedure as the uterus contracts. These cramps are similar to menstrual cramps and may vary from light to heavy in intensity. After the procedure, you will rest in the recovery room for a minimum of thirty (30) minutes. Your vital signs and bleeding will be checked before you are discharged to assure satisfactory recovery. However, no patient is to leave until she feels well enough to do so.
Medical Information and Consent Forms
You will be asked to complete a medical history form regarding any previous or current illness and/or health problems. Your consent forms and the procedure will be explained to you by the counselor. However, you must carefully read the consent forms before signing them.
- All counseling sessions are individual. Please make use of this time with your counselor to ask any questions you may have regarding your procedure. It is your right as the patient to be informed of all possible risks and/or complications known to be associated with an abortion procedure.
All lab reports, operative data and examination records will be kept in your medical records file. Please do not phone the office when requesting your medical records for physicians, insurance companies, etc. All medical records are strictly confidential and will not be released to anyone without your written consent.
